How to use RMS credits

Turn on a device's Service switch in RMS and it takes one credit from your company pool for 30 days of management; with Auto Extend on, it takes the next credit when those 30 days end. This guide covers assigning them to devices, Auto Extend, sub-companies, checking the balance and what happens when a device runs out.

The company pool

Credits belong to an RMS company, not to a device or a user. When you activate a code, the credits are added to the company your user belongs to, and they stay in that pool until a device uses one. Every credit gives one device 30 days of RMS Management. The pool is shared by everyone in the company, and a device takes from it only when its service is switched on.

How the company credit pool worksOne company pool holds the credits from every code you activate and is shared by the whole company. Four devices draw on it. Devices 1, 2 and 3 have Service on, and each takes 1 credit from the pool for every 30 days it is managed. If you run several companies in RMS (an MSP with a company per client, say), a parent company can let a sub-company draw on its credits with the Use parent credits option, or you can move credits between companies from the Companies page or the Resources page with the Move resources action: choose the resource type, the source company, the destination company and the amount.

Assigning a credit to a device

Each device in RMS has a Service switch. Turning it on uses a credit from the pool and starts the device's 30 days of management. It is the switch that controls credit activation and is used to manually use a credit, for example to enable service on a device that was not extended automatically after its 30 days. Once a device has used a credit in the past 30 days, Service cannot be switched off for that period.

When you add a device, the add dialog has the same option: enabling device service at that point activates the trial credit, or takes a credit from the company pool if the trial has already been used. If credits are available, the credit is assigned to the new device automatically.

Automatic assignment: Auto Extend

Each device also has an Auto Extend switch. With it on, the device automatically takes another credit from the pool after each 30 day period, so it stays under management for as long as the pool lasts. With it off, the device goes offline in RMS when its credit becomes invalid and stays that way until a credit is assigned by hand with the Service switch.

Auto Extend on and off over four 30 day periodsTwo devices over four 30 day periods, days 1 to 120. With Auto Extend on, the device automatically takes another credit from the pool after each 30 day period, so it is managed through all four periods. With Auto Extend off, the device is managed for days 1 to 30 on its credit, then goes offline when the credit ends and stays offline, taking no credit, until a credit is assigned by hand with the Service switch, shown here from day 91.Days 1-30Days 31-60Days 61-90Days 91-120Auto Extend onTakes a credit aftereach 30 days1 creditmanaged1 creditmanaged1 creditmanaged1 creditmanagedAuto Extend offOffline when itscredit ends1 creditmanagedOfflineno creditOfflineno credit1 creditService onby hand

Two more details are worth knowing. Auto Extend spends credits even if Monitoring is switched off for the device, so a device you have stopped watching still consumes credits while Auto Extend is on. And the device page shows a Service expires at date, the day the device will no longer be monitored, and a Management type, which reads Credit or Management pack depending on what is paying for the device.

Checking the balance and usage

Resource summary, in the account menu at the top right, shows the credits and data your company holds; it is the quickest check after activating a code. The Resources page under Administration goes further: a Resources tab listing every credit, management pack, connection data pack and company data pool assigned to your company and its sub-companies, each with a downloadable report of how it was used; a Codes tab listing every resource code your companies created, whether it was activated, by which company and when; and a Data purchases tab with the history of company data purchases and conversions.

If you prefer the API, the RMS API has a credits summary call that returns the remaining credits, the credits held in total, the number of monitored devices, and a credit coverage date: an estimate of how long the current credits will last given the device count, each device's Service and Auto Extend settings, and any sub-companies that use the parent's credits. It needs a personal access token with the credits scope, created under API in your account with two factor authentication on.

When a device runs out

A device with no valid credit and Auto Extend off goes offline in RMS and stops sending monitoring data. It comes back when a credit is assigned: turn Service on, and after re-enabling it can take a few minutes for the device to show online again. If the pool itself is empty, Auto Extend has nothing to draw on, so adding credits to the pool before the Service expires at date is what keeps a fleet continuously managed. Our calculator gives the count for a fleet and a period.

Management packs beside credits

If a device is on a management pack, its Management type reads Management pack and the pack's term, not credits, keeps it managed. Packs cannot be moved from one device to another once activated, except by arrangement with Teltonika support. Credits remain the flexible option: unassigned credits can go to any device in the company, be moved to another company, or be converted into company data for RMS Connect and RMS VPN.

What we could not confirm

Whether unused credits in a pool expire, and whether RMS can alert you when the pool is running low. We found neither on the pages below, so we make no claim about either; check the current RMS terms and the Alerts section in your account.

Quick answers

Questions this guide answers

How do I assign a credit to a device?

Open the device in RMS and turn on its Service switch. That takes one credit from the company pool and gives the device 30 days of management. This is the manual way to use a credit.

What does Auto Extend do?

With Auto Extend on, the device takes another credit from the pool at the end of each 30 day period. With it off, the device goes offline in RMS when its credit runs out until you turn Service on again.

Where do I see how many credits are left?

Resource summary in the account menu, and the Resources page under Administration, which lists credits, packs and data for your company and any sub-companies. The RMS API returns the same summary.

What happens when a device runs out?

It shows as offline in RMS and stops sending monitoring data until a credit is assigned again. Service expires at, on the device page, shows the date that will happen.
