How RMS VPN credits work

Not directly. RMS VPN is billed in company data, not in management time, and an RMS credit becomes VPN data only when you convert it inside RMS, at 2 GB per credit. The detail, from Teltonika's documentation, follows.

Two different meters

Teltonika prices RMS by service. RMS Management, the monitoring and configuration of a device, is paid for in time: a credit is 30 days for one device, and a management pack is a longer prepaid term. RMS Connect and RMS VPN, the remote access services, are paid for in data: the gigabytes that pass through a remote access session, a VPN hub or a Quick Connect session. A management credit assigned to a device does not give it VPN data, and VPN data does not keep a device under management.

Company data: the pool VPN draws on

The data pool is called company data. It belongs to the RMS company and is shared by all of that company's RMS Connect remote access sessions, VPN hubs and Quick Connect sessions. Every company on RMS receives the first 5 GB of company data free. Its activation period depends on the amount of data rather than on time.

When the free allowance is gone, there are two ways to add more. The first is to convert RMS credits: on the Companies page, the Add data action takes a number of credits from the pool and adds company data at 2 GB per credit. The second is a connection data pack, a separate Teltonika product: 150 GB assigned to one device for 10 years, or until the 150 GB is used, whichever comes first. A pack belongs to the device it was activated on and cannot be moved to another device except by arrangement with Teltonika support.

So are the credits we sell VPN credits?

They are RMS credits, the in-system resource that can be assigned to devices for management or exchanged for company data. If your company needs VPN data, you can activate our code, then convert as many credits as you like into company data inside RMS at 2 GB each; the rest stay as management credits. We do not sell company data, connection data packs or anything called VPN data, and nothing we sell is loaded onto a device's data allowance directly. If you need a 150 GB pack for one heavy device, that is a different Teltonika product.

How an RMS credit pays for management or for RMS Connect and RMS VPN dataOne RMS credit in your company pool can be used one of two ways. RMS Management, paid in time: assign the credit to a device with the Service switch or Auto Extend, and it gives that one device 30 days of RMS Management. RMS Connect and RMS VPN, paid in data: convert the credit to company data with Add data on the Companies page, and it adds 2 GB to the company data pool. That pool also holds the 5 GB every company on RMS receives free, and it is used by RMS Connect remote access sessions, VPN hubs and Quick Connect sessions. Two separate Teltonika products are not bought with credits: a management pack, a prepaid term of management for one device; and a connection data pack, 150 GB for one device for 10 years or until the data is used, which that device uses ahead of company data. One RMS creditin your company poolRMS Management: paid in timeAssign it to a deviceService switch or Auto Extend30 days of RMS Managementfor that one deviceRMS Connect and VPN: paid in dataOr convert it to company dataAdd data, on the Companies page2 GB of company datajoins the company data poolCompany data poolPlus the free 5 GB per companyUsed by RMS Connect sessions,VPN hubs and Quick ConnectSeparate Teltonika products, not bought with creditsManagement packA prepaid term ofmanagement for one deviceConnection data pack150 GB for one device, for 10years or until the data is used.Used ahead of company data.

Which pool a session uses

RMS Connect sessions draw on company data by default. If the device has an active connection data pack, its traffic uses the pack instead, and the pack takes priority over company data. In a VPN hub, a device with a pack stays connected on its own data, and that pack data can also serve the custom and RMS users on the same hub; where a hub mixes devices with and without packs, users default to company data. Connecting to a device's CLI or WebUI through RMS does not consume company data or a data pack.

When company data runs out

Devices in a VPN hub that rely on company data are disabled when the company's data runs out, and they have to be re-enabled by hand once more data has been added. Devices with an active connection data pack keep running. Keeping some headroom in the company data pool is therefore what keeps a VPN hub up, in the same way that credits in the pool keep devices managed.

Seeing what you have used

Each VPN hub and Quick Connect hub shows its data usage: the General tab gives the total data, the server location and the number of active sessions, and the Data Usage tab breaks usage down by date range, by session and by client, sent and received, with the graph exportable. The Resources page under Administration lists the company data pools and connection data packs for your company and sub-companies, and its Data purchases tab records every company data purchase and conversion. Each company also gets 100,000 free API requests per 30 day period, separate from both meters.

Budgeting an example

A company that expects to push 25 GB through RMS Connect and its VPN hub in a year has 20 GB above the free 5 GB. Converted from credits, that is 10 credits at 2 GB each; added to a year of management credits for the devices themselves, the two figures make the whole RMS budget. If one device alone will move far more than that, compare the 150 GB pack for it.

What we could not confirm

We could not confirm whether traffic between VPN hub clients is metered differently from device traffic, nor whether RMS can alert you when company data is low. We leave both out rather than guess.

Quick answers

Questions this guide answers

Does RMS VPN use the same credits I buy here?

Not directly. RMS VPN and RMS Connect are paid for with company data. An RMS credit can be converted into 2 GB of company data inside RMS, which is the link between the two.

How much RMS VPN data is free?

Teltonika gives every company on RMS the first 5 GB of company data free, shared by RMS Connect, VPN hubs and Quick Connect.

What happens when company data runs out?

Devices on company data are disabled in the VPN hub, and must be re-enabled by hand after more data is added. Devices with their own connection data pack stay connected.

Do you sell RMS data packs or company data?

No. We sell RMS credits only, with RMS management packages coming soon. The 150 GB connection data pack is a separate Teltonika product, and company data is added inside RMS.
